GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet on this week meeting has decided to destroy as many as 2,479 rhino horns out of 2,623 stockpiled in State Treasuries in order to bust myths around it and save the rhinos.
The cabinet has also decided to preserve 94 horns as heritage pieces for academic purposes and 50 will be reserved for court cases.
Cabinet also decided to reopen schools for Class 10 students from September 20 onwards.
To benefit low-income groups, "The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (Licensing of Rickshaws Pullers) Bye-Laws, 1976" to be repealed to the effect that there is no registration in respect of rickshaws, thelas, hand-pulled cars etc.

Cabinet to sanction Rs. 379 crore under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana to pay the insurance premium of the farmers.
Horticulture Nursery, Ulubari and Ulubari Nursery to be converted into state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure development of 12 farms under Assam Seeds Corporation Ltd.

In another decision, Assam cabinet has declared Karam Puja, a major festival of tea tribe community of Assam, on September 17 a state holiday.
Also, a post of Chief Engineer PWD (Health & Education) was created to expedite all health and educational infrastructure projects undertaken by the PWD in the state.
