Assam: Clause 6 Committee Hands over Report to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Guwahati, February 25, 2020:

The Assam government has formally received the Ministry of Home Affairs-recommended Committee’s report on the definition of ‘Assamese’ on Tuesday.

The MHA committee today met Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and handed over the highly anticipated report that would further decide the future course of action.

State Finance & Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking with the mediapersons here said, “We got the report. Now, the content of the report will be examined. It has not been seen by us. It has not been seen by the central government so far. So, the report has to be considered in the light of the constitution and laws of the land.”

He added that the definition suggested by the MHA committee will be further deliberated upon in the Assam Assembly. “Regarding the definition of the Assamese, the Assam Assembly has to deliberate on the definition suggested by the committee. All these follow-up actions will be taken. But before that the central government has to see the report.”

Speaking on the lines of media reports citing 1951 as the base year for the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), Sarma said that those are mere speculations and should not be given much attention. “The report has been submitted in a sealed cover. There’s no question of speculations.”

It needs mention here that the committee, constituting the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leaders as members boycotted the visit to Assam CM’s residence for submission of the report.
