Assam CM announces reforms for police stations; check details here

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today participated in a conference with the Officer-In-Charge (OCs) of police stations across Assam on 'redefining policing standards in Assam.'

The CM today announced several new initiatives for the OCs of the police stations.

Sarma said that residential quarters would be built within premises of all police stations for an OC and 3 sub-inspectors. He also added that the CID will train OCs in preparing charge sheets. The health department will conduct health check-ups every 15 days for police personnel.

Henceforth, all OCs will be provided one vehicle each for their police stations.

Motorcycles would be provided for police stations in difficult and inaccessible areas.

Sarma added that 3 computers would be provided to all police stations for streamlining FIR filing & other activities.

Sarma emphasized the need to manage each police station in the state as this will lead to more efficient handling of affairs.

"This time we have started this initiative. Henceforth, we will meet the OCs every 6 months," Sarma said.

Sarma told media persons that henceforth, the Assam police force will focus on crimes against women.

"Women should feel protected. Mothers and sisters should feel secure. Youths should not have access to drugs," he said. "Police will not tolerate someone laying hands on women. Strict action shall be taken as per law. Stringent action will be taken against rape."

Sarma said that miscreants should be afraid of police while the average joe should regard men in uniform as "friends."

He further exuded hope that in the next meet with the OCs -- scheduled to be held 6 months from now -- a lot of changes will be witnessed.
