GUWAHATI: The Assam government today publicly burned drugs confiscated during the police crackdown against drugs in the last two months in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, respectively.
According to reports, in Golaghat, 802 grams heroin, Ganja (Cannabis) 1200 kg, opium 3 kg, 1,06,177 illegal tablets were burned down.
Members of the house, including state Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Minister for Agriculture and Veterinary, Atul Bora, and Health Minister, Keshab Mahanta, were present at the 'Seized Drugs Disposal' programme to support the Assam police.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today proclaimed that the police have seized about 20% of the total amount of drugs available in the black market.

He said the “Burning of drugs” has been done to send a strong message to the drug smugglers of the state.
In the Assam police's crackdown in the last two months, drugs worth Rs 170 crore have been seized, he said.
"Police have seized around 20 kg heroin with market value of 40 crore. On the other hand, as many as 1,493 drug peddlers have been arrested so far,' Sarma added.
Meanwhile, 11.88 kilos of morphine, 3.47 kilos of heroin, 102 kilos of cannabis, and over 2 lakh tablets were burned in Karbi Anglong's district headquarter Diphu.
The rest of the seized narcotics would be burned in Nagaon and Hojai on July 18.
Altogether illegal drugs worth Rs 163 crore will be burned down.
It needs to be mentioned that state police's crackdown against illegal narcotics, initiated after CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took office, has been going on for the past 2 months.
