Assam Congress, AASU stage protests against fuel price hike

The Assam Congress on July 2^nd, 2020 staged a statewide protest against the hike in prices of petrol and diesel even after a fall in crude oil prices in the international market. The protestors demanded rollback of the prices.

Congress workers in Moran, Assam, staged a three-hour-long sit-in demonstration in-front-of the Mahmora Block Congress office. The protestors also sent a memorandum raising the issue through the Mahmora Circle Officer.

Meanwhile, the Demow unit of the All Assam Students’ Union, in Sivasagar district burnt the effigies of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in protest against the rise in prices of petrol and diesel.

It may be mentioned that the Congress on June 29^th, 2020, staged a nation-wide protest against the fuel price hike. A campaign - #SpeakUpAgainstFuelHike campaign was launched by the party on Twitter.

In a video messages, the leader of the Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia accused the saffron party-led National Democratic Alliance government of not giving the effort to give relief to the poor people of the country at this crisis time caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

In January Brent Crude was worth about 63$ per barrel which later decreased to 55$ in February. Currently, it is at 42.76% per barrel. The price decreased has been due to many reasons: initially led by the Russian disagreements over production cuts and later due to the lack of consumption amid the Corona lockdown. This even led to WTI to reach negative rates. However, in India, the retail price of petrol and diesel has not seen lowering costs amid the international price falling. Instead, the prices have only increased. The current petrol price in the National Capital is Rs 80.43, in February it was Rs 71.
