Assam Congress members on February 15 are staging a protest against the BJP led Government's "anti ST, SC, OBC politics" in Guwahati city.

Addressing a large gathering of Congress workers and leaders here earlier today, 3-time Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi warned the Government not to play with the emotions of the people. "BJP, instead of solving the problems of the poor and downtrodden, is trying to hurt their interests even further. This injustice is being protested by the agitating Congress members. The most downtrodden in India -- be it the tribals or the dalits - are behind in education, economic as well as social status. We have given them reservation due to which they have been able to make some strides."

Gogoi also said that whereas the Congress had always stood with the poor and oppressed, the BJP has only benefited the corporations with its schemes and policies.

Gogoi, claiming that the 6th Schedule areas were "gifts" to the tribal people by the Congress party, said that the BJP is curtailing the rights of the poor by its opposition to the special rights and privileges against the underprivileged classes.

The Congress move comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court verdict delivered on February 7 where it said that there is "no fundamental right which inheres in an individual to claim reservation in promotions", and also no court can order a state government to provide for reservation to SC/STs.
