GUWAHATI: The Assam Congress has issued a show-cause notice to party MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed over provocative statements and acting as an agent of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) despite being a party member.

Issuing the notice, Congress said, "It has been observed by AICC and APCC that despite holding a responsible position as an MLA of the Congress Party you have time and again given statements in media and in a public forum against party policies and matters with communal overtones having great propensity to destroy the social harmony of our state."

It said, "As a lawmaker, your communally provocative comments in the media gnawing at old wounds of the Assam agitation when people from all communities suffered are completely insensitive and uncalled for. Your comments, according to the APCC, are politically motivated, with the intent of causing harm to the Congress party just before the bye-elections."

Congress claims that this is not the first time Ali has given communally provocative statements, earlier also he had given such statements and gone against party discipline.

Despite warnings from party leadership, he has made communally provocative comments on Assam agitation incidents on Sept 29, 2021, and September 30, 2021, in front of media that has gone viral in social media platforms as well which is not acceptable to the Congress party and APCC views that such comments will further give fuel to the BJP's divisive communal agenda in Assam, said Congress.

Congress further said, "Allegations are also flying within and outside the party that you are acting as a BJP agent while still a member of the Congress party and that your closeness to State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are being sponsored  to make such comments in order to harm the Congress, especially during election time."

Under the circumstances, the APCC president would seek an explanation from Ali for his actions and also why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for giving communally provocative statements with intent to disturb social harmony prior to By-Elections.

The party hereby instructed him to send his response within three days of receiving this letter to APCC President.
