Assam Congress MPs Protest Outside Parliament, Demand that Assam Floods be Declared as 'National Problem'

New Delhi, July 15, 2019:

Assam Congress MPs on July 15 have reiterated their demand that the floods in Assam be declared as a 'national problem' by staging at protest at the Parliament in national capital New Delhi.

The MPs, including Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque, along with APCC President Ripun Bora held up placards at the Parliamentary premises imploring the Government to take measures to tackle the issue of floods.

Pradyut Bordoloi held up a placard blaming the Assam Government for turning a blind eye to the plight of the people. "people of Assam are drowning and Assam Government is sleeping". Ripun Bora held up a placard demanding that the Assam floods be declared as a national problem. Meanwhile, Khaleque's placard read: "release central fund to the flood victims of Assam."

There has been a long demand to declare the Assam state floods as a national issue and it has been raised my many politicians such as Bordoloi, and the Bodo People's Front (BPF) firebrand Biswajit Daimary.

The APCC President Bora has also given a Zero Hour Notice in the Rajya Sabha over the ongoing flood situation in the state.

It is to be mentioned that over 26 lakh people have been affected due to the floods in the State. As per official records, ten people have also lost their lives due to the floods.

Animals have also been adversely affected by the floods and many animals are trapped in flood waters in Kaziranga National Park. Some have even been hit by speeding vehicles while attempting to cross the National Highway 37 to seek respite by escaping to highlands of Karbi Anglong.
