Members of Assam Congress have taken to the streets on Monday, as a move to protest against the BJP Government's move to remove Special Protection Group (SPG) protection to the Congress party leadership in New Delhi. As a mark of protest, the Congress members have gheraoed the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati to make their voices heard.

According to the Congress party members, the protest is being held against the "vindictive decision of the withdrawal of SPG protection from former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former President Rahul Gandhi, and Uttar Pradesh Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi.

The BJP-led Central Government's move to remove protection from the former Prime Minister Singh, as well as members of the Gandhi family, has been widely condemned by members of the Congress party across the nation. The Congress leaders in Assam, led by President of the party here, Ripun Bora, are raising slogans against the BJP Government for this "unfair" move of removing protection to the topmost-layer of the Congress leadership in New Delhi.

It may be mentioned here that the SPG protection of the Gandhi clan was removed on Friday, and the he three will now be given Z-plus security by the CRPF. A senior official informed that the decision was taken "after a detailed security assessment". They were included in the VVIP security list following an amendment in September 1991 in the SPG Act of 1988.
