Guwahati, September 13, 2019:

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) showing concern over the excluded people from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has initiated a tour across Assam to sensitize and help them.

Speaking on the issue, former minister and current Samaguri MLA, Rockybul Hussain said, “Many genuine citizens have been left out from the NRC and it’s a matter of great concern. We want people who came to Assam before March 1971 and exclude the names who came after the midnight of March 24, 1971.”

He added that the government should end this issue once and for all.

Hussain stated that earlier when the draft NRC was published and 40 lakh people were excluded, the BJP tried to take credit on the national level by declaring that they have identified 40 lakh illegal migrants from Assam. “But, after the final one, they have taken a U-turn and are now blaming NRC coordinator for certain errors whereas, it was the state and central government who were actively engaged in the work”, he added.

He further claimed that many people who came to India before 1971 having refugee card and migrant were also excluded from this NRC. Several people have been summoned very long distances for hearings. There are many situations where the people have to Dhubri to Sivasagar or other such places.

“It seems that the government is trying to divert the issues of Assam by making these people line up with the citizenship issue”, he said.

Speaking on the same, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Congress is concerned about the genuine citizens that have been excluded from the NRC and so they have taken this initiative to help those left out genuine citizens.

He added, “During this journey, the Congress will not just sensitize the people but will also help them in all possible aspect.”

Gogoi added that if the situation comes, they will even protest. “We will protest with the people if needed. Why the indigenous people should be pulled down to a Foreigners’ Tribunal to prove their citizenship. We will question the NRC on how can it exclude a genuine citizen from the list.”

The Congress team has started the journey from Rajiv Bhawan and will be heading to Tinsukia today.

They will hold public interaction in various places in Upper Assam and then they will come down to Middle Assam and then towards Barak Valley.
