Guwahati, January 6, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, on January 6, lashing out at the ruling administration, said that the members of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) should be sacked after the cricket match between India and Sri Lanka, scheduled to be held at Guwahati's Barsapara stadium, had to be abandoned due to wet patches on the pitch.

Mocking the ACA for its inability to conduct the match smoothly, Gogoi said  "We constructed the fields, they have not been able to host the match even. They could not even dry the pitch. That is indeed shameful. The pride of Assam has been hurt on the national and international stage. Because of 2-3 people, we have been shown to be useless in front of the world. They should not only apologize, they should, in fact, resign."

"They are seeing dreams of transforming Guwahati into a sports capital. They have not been able to construct a single stadium, they are still using the ones that we built. They should have been able to build stadiums not only in Guwahati, but also in the hinterland. They have Rijiju now at the Centre. But no, they have not been able to build a single stadium", Gogoi said, slamming the BJP party for its alleged inability to develop sports infrastructure in the region.

Taking digs at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi said that Narendra Modi has emerged as 'Hindu Jinnah' in the State, and claimed that the BJP's Hindutva policy has been rejected outright by the Hindu people themselves.

Speaking on the lines of the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act that sparked nationwide debates, Gogoi said: "They are now saying that they will not budge a single inch on the CAA, which proves that they are drunk on power. The BJP have shown their true colors of fascism and Hitlerism. They are imposing their will on the people. The people's trust is eroding fast -- he is now being defeated in one state after the other."

"If Modi himself is in poor shape, imagine the condition of Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarbananda Sonowal who came to power in the Modi wave", Gogoi said, adding, "We were also in power for 15 years. We were not shown black flags, neither were we ostracized. Himanta Biswa Sarma was with us. Although he keeps running his mouth, but he is being confronted with black flags everywhere. They were even being subjected to protests at the recent cricket match. And yet, they claim they will win 100 seats (in the 2021 Assembly elections)."
