Following the incidents of stone-pelting between two groups leading to escalation of tension on August 2nd, 2020 evening, the Cachar district administration, Assam has clamped curfew in the areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town with immediate effect.

In an order issued to this effect on August 3rd, 2020, the District Magistrate, Keerthi Jalli, said apprehending breach of peace and tranquility, curfew has been promulgated 'prohibiting the total movement of persons' in areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town with immediate effect.

Two groups indulged in pelting stones at each other at Ghoniwala area of Silchar town on Sunday evening. Assam Police, CRPF and other security personnel rushed to the area of incident and brought the situation under control.

As simmering tension prevails and there is every likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquility, the administration has clamped curfew in the areas falling under Malugram Police Outpost.

However, the order exempts magistrates on duty, police, military and para military forces, health functionaries, including doctors and para medics.

The order that comes into force with immediate effect shall continue to remain in force until further orders.

“We are investigating the incident. No arrest has been made so far. We want that nobody gives it a communal colour. We have asked all our police stations to be on alert. The two neighbouring districts of Hailakandi and Karimganj are also maintaining an alert,” the SP said.

He further said the troops had been deployed as a confidence-building measure and to keep the criminal elements at bay.
