Assam: Curfew Lifted in Tinsukia & Dibrugarh on Christmas Eve

Tinsukia, December 24, 2019:

Amid the sustained and ongoing protests against the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act, the Upper Assam town of Tinsukia, night curfew that has been in effect over the past several days, has finally been called off "until further orders."

An order sent out from the office of the district Magistrate, Bhaskar Pegu, proclaimed, "In view of the improving situation in the district and the holy occasion of Christmas and festivities during the festival period, the night curfew U/S 144 Cr.Pc which has been in force in the district so far is hereby relaxed and lifted from the district from the evening of 24th December 2019 until further orders."

It may be mentioned here that curfew had been clamped in several districts of Assam after protests broke out after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha on December 11.
