Guwahati, January 17, 2020:

Leader of Opposition, Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has written to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal seeking financial help for Sanidul Islam, who was injured during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Guwahati in December 2019.

He has requested the CM to provide requisite financial and logistical assistance so that Sanidul may avail specialized treatment at a well-equipped hospital.

In his letter addressed to the CM, Saikia stated that Sanidul was supposed to sit for his matriculation examination but he sustained bullet injuries on his head. He was receiving treatment at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital but he required better medical aid.

He said, “The state of Ssnidul’s health at present is far from satisfactory. I met the lad yesterday at the premises rented by the family in the city and discovered that his left hand is paralysed. Moreover, his reaction/reflexes are perceptibly slow.”

It may be mentioned here that Sanidul sustained bullet after Police personnel opened fire at Guwahati’s Hatigaon while trying to quell the protests against the CAA. He was released from GMCH on December 20 but his health has deteriorated.

“Sanidul is a student and as a result if police action, he is now bed-ridden at a time when he ought to have been preparing for the examination which will shape his future. On top of that, his father is a man of modest means,” wrote the leader of Opposition.

Five youths were killed and several others were injured at the hands of security personnel during the anti-CAA protests in December 2019. Sanidul Islam is one of them. Debabrata Saikia has urged the Chief Minister to help Sanidul and his family by providing them the required financial and logistics assistance.

“I am sure you will agree that this is the least your government can do to discharge its moral responsibility,” added Saikia.
