Assam | Doctor thrashed by tea laborers in Dibrugarh, Medical Association demands justice

Dibrugarh, May 11, 2019:

A video has gone viral showing a doctor named Pravin Chandra Thakur being brutally attacked by a mob of tea workers in Dikam Tea Estate located in Assam's Dibrugarh district.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 6 when a tree fell during a storm, injuring three workers. A female tea laborer called Jhalo Surjan was killed on the way to the hospital.

Footage shows an angry mob descending on the hapless doctor and raining multiple blows on the doctor who was grievously injured in the incident. He was subsequently admitted in the ICU of Aditya Hospital located in Dibrugarh. It has been reported that seventeen tea workers have been arrested in relation to the incident.

Now, doctors from the Indian Medical Association have staged a protest demanding justice. They have further demanded security provisions to be made for doctors serving in tea estates and insisted that CCTV cameras be installed at the tea estate hospitals to monitor activities.
