28 July 2018:

With less than 48 hours left for Assam to publish the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), the state government on Saturday appealed to people to not panic in case their names do not figure in the document.

“This is not the final NRC. As such, there is nothing to be panicked about. People, whose names would not figure in it, will get a chance to file claims and objections,” Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said while talking to reporters.

Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also appealed to people to maintain calm.

In a tweet, he wrote: “Final draft of NRC to be published on July 30 and will be followed by transparent process of claims, objections. All aggrieved will be heard. Entire process is being carried out on the direct monitoring of honourable Supreme Court. Maintain peace. All genuine Indian citizens will be protected”.

The Assam police also appealed to people to maintain peace.

“The sensitive zones have been identified. A place that we thought was hyper-sensitive has been brought down to the level of sensitive through our IEC (information, education and communication) programme. We have organised awareness programmes at various places,” Special Director General of Police (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharya told InsideNe.
