Assam: Elephant, seized for alleged killing, handed over to forest authorities

The female elephant and her calf, seized by the Assam police for allegedly killing a boy, have been handed over to the forest authorities on Thursday, stated police.

GOLAGHAT: The female elephant and her calf, seized by the Assam police for allegedly killing a boy, have been handed over to the forest authorities on Thursday, stated police.

Reportedly, the female elephant Dulumoni allegedly killed a 14-year old boy on July 8 in Bokakhat district of Assam.

The incident gave rise to public outrage pressurizing the police to take action.

Followed by the allegations, the Bokakhat police  registered a case under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and seized the female elephant along with her calf on Wednesday.

As per sources, both the animals are owned by former MLA of Bokakhat, Jiten Gogoi.

Assam Police on Elephant Seizure

Talking to InsideNE, SI PN Sharma of Bokakhat Police informed that the elephant and the calf have been handed over to Kaziranga National Park authorities for their safety on Thursday.

"The elephants cannot be maintained without the mahout. Hence the expenses of the mahout and the maintenance cost will be borne by the owner",

Further investigation is going on, informed the SI.
