Assam: Escape attempts of jail inmates undergoing COVID treatment bid foiled

A number of inmates of the Guwahati Central Jail, Assam, who are currently undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Sonapur, tried to escape the care centre, located at around 33 km east from Guwahati. However, their attempt bid foiled by the Assam Police personnel.

A total of 175 prisoners are undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in the centre while 17 others have been discharged and sent to jail.

A total of 184 prisoners from the Guwahati Central Jail were tested COVID-19 positive including NDFB-R Chief Ranjan Daimary on July 16th, 2020.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leaders Akhil Gogoi, Dhajya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal and Manasgh Konwar were also tested positive for the lethal virus. They were also lodged in the jail.

However, the Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) GP Singh said that the security arrangement at the COVID care centre has been beefed up. “Additional forces have been deployed there,” he added.

Assam reported highest ever spike in COVID-19 cases on July 17th, 2020. It reported 1218 new COVID-19 cases including 570 from Guwahati alone.

Out of 1218 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 7705 are active and 14,105 have been cured and discharged while 51 died due to the infection. With these cases, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has gone up to 21,864.

The state crossed 20,000 mark in COVID-19 cases on July 16th, 2020 while crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020.
