Assam | Ex Gratia of Rs 5 Lakh Handed Over to Kin of 'Bodoland Movement' Martyrs

Kokrajhar, June 4, 2019:

The Government of Assam has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the 'Bodoland Movement' martyrs. Two hundred and eighty martyrs' families were handed over the amount on Tuesday at Kokrajhar town's Chandamari Cultural Complex at a programme which began at 11 am in the morning.

The amount announced for the kin of the martyrs was officially handed over to them via cheques by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Government headed by Hagrama Mohilary.

BTC Chief Hagrama Daimary, Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, Rihan Daimary, and Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary were some of the dignitaries who were present during the occasion.

During the programme, BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary thanked the Assam Government for extending financial assistance to the 2,624 martyrs of the Bodoland Movement.

Mohilary said: "Assam Government's recognition to Bodoland Movement martyrs is a big thing. Money is less important than the Government's gesture."

Mohilary ALSO criticized the Congress party for not giving due recognition to the fallen Bodo warriors during its regime."

It may be mentioned that from 2 March 1987, the Bodos of Assam started a vigorous mass movement demanding a separate state in the north bank of river Brahmaputra under the leadership of All Bodo Students’ Union and Bodo People’s Action Committee. The movement attracted nationwide attention with both its integrationist and secessionist assertions.

The Bodo movement is a complex one with the transition from one phase to another with the change in demands and leadership.

The Bodo movement can fit into the categories of movements for separate statehood; insurgent movements and cultural rights movements.

All throughout these process, the middle class has played an important role in leading the movement while at the same time promoting their class interest through the movement.
