Assam facing severe crisis of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients

Assam is facing a severe crisis of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients. Health minister Pijush Hazarika said the government has decided to conduct treatment of mildly and moderately symptomatic patients in COVID care centres. The Centre had also sanctioned Rs 97.49 crore proposal of the Assam government in August to build Health-related infrastructure to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. ICU beds in Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and Mahendra Mohan Choudhary Hospital (MMCH) are almost full, and other beds are also likely to be filled up if the situation does not change soon.

Meanwhile, Assam’s total coronavirus caseload has crossed 1.25 lakhs since the first case that was reported on March 31 in Karimganj. The COVID data shows on an average Assam detects more than 1000 new cases every day that escalates up to 2500 on odd days. Guwahati has been more than 500 cases each day. The death toll has also pushed to 360 while the active cases in the state are 28273.
