Guwahati, May 21, 2019:

The Food Safety Department (FDA) raided the markets of Fancy Bazar in Guwahati early in the morning today. FDA officials seized 36 quintal mangoes from the fruit market and disposed it off.

The raid was carried out by department officials- LR Nampui, Champak Kumar Pathak, Tarun Das, and Anil Sharma. They raided the wholesale market where it was found that sellers are using calcium carbide to ripen the fruits within a short span of 13-14 hours.

It is to be mentioned here that as holy month of Ramzan is here, the demand for fruits has gone up significantly, and to overcome the shortage of fruits, the sellers are using artificial ripening agents to ripen the fruits.
