Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma early in the morning on Saturday set an example for posterity for donating blood. The Minister donated blood at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, one of the premier medical institutions in the state.
Drawing parallels between donating books, and donating blood on Twitter, the Finance Minister wrote,: "Books & blood should be donated generously. One powers knowledge, other life!"
"To observe seva saptah as part of PM Sri @narendramodi's birthday celebrations, I am humbled to donate blood at Guwahati Medical College & Hospital this morning, Sept 14", the Assam Finance Minister further added.
This gesture was appreciated by Twiterrati, who commended Biswa Sarma for his act. "We are truly thankful for your blood donations. We highly appreciate for your great initiative and this will really motivate and inspire people for donating the same", one user wrote.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe 'seva saptah', or the service week from Saturday, September 14 to September 20, to celebrate Prime Minister's birthday on September 17.
During the week, a plethora of social initiatives has been planned across the nation by the saffron party's members.
BJP national general secretary Arun Singh had earlier said in a statement, "If there is anybody who can solve problems faced by the poor people in the country, it is Narendra Modi. Therefore, on September 17, which is Narendra Modi's birthday, the BJP has decided to celebrate Sept 14-20 as 'seva saptah."
Amit Shah and working president JP Nadda at 8 am on Saturday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) inaugurated the event at the AIIMS hospital in Delhi when they distributed fruits among the patients. They also swept the floors of the hospital.
