GUWAHATI: The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday held a meeting with the representatives of Tai-Ahom and Matak communities to discuss on their demand for being accorded the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Sarma informed them that the state government has agreed in principle to recommend to the Centre its inclusion in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

The CM urged Tai Ahom bodies & Tribal Sangha to sit together to sort out their issues. All indigenous communities must remain united to protect Sukapha’s Assam from infiltrators.
The chief minister informed Tai-Ahoms will be accorded protected class status in tribal blocks and belts of the state, while a Tai Language Teaching Centre would be set up by the state government to popularise it.
The Assam government will release Rs 125 cr committed to Tai Ahom Development Council by November 30.
