Guwahati, January 9, 2020:

Assam Finance Minister Himanata Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the state government has taken initiative to provide one-time financial aid of Rs. 1 Lakh to the children of employees of Nagaon & Cachar paper mills pursuing higher education.

Addressing the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government has launched new schemes for the children of employees of the Nagaon & Cachar paper mills pursuing medical and engineering courses. According to the scheme, these children will be provided an aid of Rs 1 lakh for one time.

Sarma mentioned that the children of the mill workers who are pursuing graduation will get Rs 50,000 and those pursuing PhD will get a grant of Rs 75,000. Students perusing higher secondary will be granted Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 10,000 will be granted to the children student in the 10th standard.

According to the finance minister, the students will be able to apply for the grants from January 14 onwards through the online website of Assam government.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of Recognised Union, (JACRU) Nagaon and Cachar Paper Mills, Assam, in a statement feels that the Government's aid has come too little too late.

"In our view Kumbha Karna Government woke up from sleeping after the students are forced to beg on road for saving their right to education and academic career", the body said, adding, "This is only to divert the main issue to revive the paper industries of Assam and to release 36 months' pending salary including statutory dues as 60 workers have already died; 3 of them have committed suicides."
