MARGHERITA: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited NEC Margherita as a part of his 3 days tour to Upper Assam on Saturday.
During his visit, the Chief Minister had discussions on the merit in immediately starting the Tirap colliery & Tirap Open Cast Project.
"This has potential to produce 0.7 mn tonnes coal per year", said the Chief Minister in a tweet.
"We boast of a coal reserve of 525 mn tonnes out of which a paltry 17.90 mn tonnes have been extracted so far. We need concerted effort to scale this up", added the Chief Minister.

Sarma further said that the state government shall work expeditiously to resolve all the issues related Environment and Forest and Land Revenue Department. The Chief Minister also stated that he will discuss with both Union coal and environment ministry to resolve all pending clearances.
He informed that in the Coming Month a Tripartite talks shall be held at New Delhi Where Assam Government, Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Government of India shall participate.
He further said that there is a Complex problem of NEC due to non Clearance of Assam Pollution Control Board, National Board for Wildlife, Forest Department and Revenue Problem for which NEC is suffering from a huge losses since many years.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Margherita Constituency MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Union Minister for Food Processing Rameswar Teli, State Minister for Welfare of Tea Tribes Sanjay Kishan, State Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Borah, and other Officials.
Many Organisations of Margherita met Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and gave Memorandum regarding some burning issues of Margherita and its surrounding areas.
