Assam govt declares 3-day state mourning marking Bhumidhar Barman’s demise

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to former chief minister Bhumidhar  Barman who passed away following prolonged illness at the age of 91 this evening.

The body of Barman will also be cremated with full state honour, an official statement said this evening.

During the period, the National Flag will be flown at half mast in all offices where it is flown regularly and no official entertainment will be held.

Meanwhile, condolences poured in from all quarters at the demise of the veteran Congress leader.

“Anguished by the passing away of former Assam CM and senior politician, Shri Bhumidhar Barman. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief: PM

“The death of Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, the former Chief Minister who served as a respected leader in the political field of Assam for five decades, is an irreparable loss for Assam and the Congress party.

“May his departed soul rest in peace and condolences to the bereaved family,” the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee posted on Facebook.

Senior BJP leader and former Cabinet colleague of Barman, Himanta Biswa Sarma, posted: “Today we lost a stalwart of Assam politics - former CM and 7-time MLA Late Bhumidhar Barman.

“I have fond memories of his guidance and affection, starting with my early political career. He leaves behind a rich legacy of good politics & work. We shall miss him.

“My condolences.”

Assam Jatiya Parishad president and former All Assam Students’ Union leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi in his post wrote: “I am saddened to hear the death of former Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Bhumidhar Barman.

“Dr. Bhumidhar Barmandev was an efficient and popular politician in Assam politics during independence.

“His death is an irreparable loss to the social sector of Assam.

“May his departed soul rest in peace and expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family. Om Shanti.”

“Anguished by the demise of former chief minister and veteran leader Dr. Bhumidhar Barman. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family members and prayers for the departed soul,” tweeted Asom Gana Parishad president Atul Bora.

Congress MP from Kaliabor Gaurav Gogoi tweeted: “Expressing my condolences to an outstanding political stalwart of Assam, Dr Bhumidhar Barman. Praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul, I also express my sympathy to the bereaved family.”
