Assam Govt Employees Cease Work, Join AASU 'Satyagraha'

Guwahati, December 18, 2019:

As the three-day Gana Satyagraha organized by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) reaches its final day, the employees of the Assam State Government have ceased work on Wednesday to add their voices to the rising protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Basab Kalita, the President of the Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) stated that the organization has also extended support to All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in the Satyagraha.

Many of the employees of the state government have joined the gana-satyagraha that was initiated by the AASU on December 16 at the historic Latasil playground.

On December 14, Saturday, it was announced that all employees of the state government across Assam would not attend their offices on December 18. Kalita stated that they have been opposing the Bill (now an Act) since the very beginning, and will continue to do so until the Act is rolled back by the Central Government.

Thousands upon thousands of people from all walks of life have participated in the Satyagraha. Senior citizens, women’s groups, educators, Lawyers' Associations took part in the Satyagraha to oppose the Bill-turned-Act.

Unremitting chants of “Jai Aai Axom”, “Scrap the C(A)A or arrest us” and slogans of “No CAB” have been the highlight of the ongoing movement, and the organizations taking part in the Satyagraha have reiterated their stand against the C(A)A.

AASU Chief Advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharjya stated that this movement has no longer been confined to the urban areas but has also spread to the remotest areas of the state and flourished there.

Thirty indigenous people’s organizations from the state participated on the second day of the ongoing mass movement. Under the banner of Assam Medical Association (AMA), a group of doctors in white coats also carried out a demonstration in the playground with placards and shouted slogans against the C(A)A.
