GUWAHATI: The Assam Government today decided to institute a judicial inquiry into the Dhalpur firing incident which claimed lives of two civilians and injured several including police personnel.

According to an official release, the inquiry would be conducted under the chairmanship of a retired judge of Gauhati High Court.

Continuing the eviction process, the Assam government today went for eviction in Dhalpur are of Sipajhar where they met with severe protest from the locals over the eviction which led to a clash between the police and the locals.

According to sources, over 10,000 encroachers were protesting at the no 3 area against the eviction drive.

In an attempt to control the crowd police opened fire.

The evictions are being carried out more than three months after CM Sarma threatened to evict alleged illegal encroachers, most of whom are Muslims of Bengali descent, for infringing on government land.

This is despite a court order stating that no evictions would be carried out during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The court's pandemic-related order from May 10 states, "Any decree for eviction/dispossession or demolition which was passed by any court, tribunal or authority during this period shall stay in abeyance subject to any particular orders which may be passed in a given case."
