Assam Govt Keen to Hold Peace Talks with ULFA(I) Post Bodo Accord

Guwahati, February 8, 2020:

The Assam government is keen on beginning the peace dialogue with the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) or ULFA(I). The state government has expressed its concerns on resolving the matter with ULFA(I) days after the signing of the historic Bodo Accord.

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated the government’s intention to initiate peace talks with the Paresh Barua-led ULFA(I) on Friday. Sarma has been calling out to the outfit to come overground and participate in the peace process. However, this time he informed the media that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been informed about the ULFA peace talks.

While speaking to mediapersons, Sarma said, “We have thoroughly informed the Prime Minister regarding peace talks with Paresh Barua faction of ULFA and he asked us to discuss it with Home Minister Amit Shah.”

The decision of the Assam government to initiate the peace talks with ULFA(I) would be taken formally only after discussions with the Home Minister on the matter.

It may be mentioned here that Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had called out to the ULFA(I) to participate in the peace talks during the 'Bodo Peace Accord' celebrations in Kokrajhar

While addressing the mega event celebrating the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord in Kokrajhar, Sarma said, “Today, from this very stage, I urge the ULFA-I and other militant organizations to join the Centre in the peace talks. I especially request the ULFA-I to come overground and join the discussions to promote peace in Assam.”
