Assam Govt Officials Caught Red-Handed while Accepting Bribe, Arrested

Sivsagar, November 19, 2019:

On Tuesday, Assistant Rohini Gogoi (aged 57) and Accounts Officer Ajit Sonowal (aged 54), of the office of the Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering in North Lakhimpur district in Assam were caught red handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station team

The duo was nabbed while accepting a bribe amount of Rs. 50,000 from complainant Makhan Saikia of Lakhimpur. The bribe money has been seized from the possession of the accused.

A certain Tularam Saikia, a grade-IV employee of the said office had retired from service on March 11, 2019, and he was harassed and denied his leave salary by the accused Rohini Gogoi for non payment of bribe amount of 30% of the due leave salary.

Tularam Saikia died on February 2, 2019, without receiving the due retirement benefit. The accused did not even spare his son and he alongwith the accounts officer Ajit Sonowal, while constantly harassing the son Makhan Saikia, even enhanced the demand to Rs 1 lakh for payment of leave salary.

As the complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe amount to the said public servant, he approached the ACB PS in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption of Assam and accordingly a trap was laid in the matter of ACB PS Case No. 15/2019 dtd. 16-11-2019 u/s 7 (a) of Prevention of Corruption act, 1988 (as amended 2018).

Today, both the accused were arrested. Both the accused public servants have been arrested and will be forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Assam, in Guwahati on November 20, 2019, due procedures are observed.
