In a great news for students and parents alike (and dreadful news for owners of private schools!), the Government of Assam has started taking steps to regulate the fee structure of private schools in Assam.
This will be done through a five-member committee consisting of either a retired district judge/senior civil servant/senior police officer, a chartered accountant, a civil engineer, a representative from a non-government educational institution, and an academician. All of the representatives will be elected for a period of five years.
The fees to be paid by the students of private schools will be fixed only after a proper examination of fee structure and scrutiny of important documents and accounts.
The panel will also take into account the location of the school, investment incurred to set up the school, infrastructure, expenditure on administration and maintenance, strength of students, qualification of teaching staff, expenditure incurred on students, among other things.
This committee will also be endowed with power to take action against schools supposedly taking exorbitant sums of money in the name of imparting education.
Based on the Assam Non-Government Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fees) Act, the maximum fee limit of a non-government school can charge will have to be determined at the start of every academic session.
