Transparency and accountability need of the hour

By and by there has been complaints related to the malfunctioning of the Hailakandi Municipal Board. There has been complaints regarding the inefficiency of it. The Deputy Commissioner of the District has asked the Municipal Board to increase efficiency and work adequately for  the people.

In a letter to Shyamali Roy, Chairperson of the Board, the Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan stated that lately the administration has been engulfed by complaints of waterlogging, haphazard parking, choking drains and the list continues. This reflects the impotency of the Municipal Board. He asked the Chairperson to be responsible enough and work for the betterment of the lot.

Drawing the attention of the Chairperson to Section 297 which is the Assam Municipal Act, 1956, Khan stated that the act has empowered the State government or the Deputy  Commissioner to keep a Virgil eye on the working of the Board and can call upon the Board to perform it’s duties for the welfare of the people. At the advent of it's failure it can take necessary steps to appoint well equipped and competent people in interest of the public. Since the Municipal Board is an elected representative it has to work for the people without hindering the basic fabrics of democracy.

Referring to section 298, it also stated that the government also had the power to dissolve the Board if it fails to meet the demands of the people.

Khan,  asked the Chairperson to reserve a day in a week to listen to public grievances and redress them within the framework of specific time period.
