Guwahati, August 5, 2019:

In a tragic development, a vehicle carrying Assam villagers from Hajo's Suntoli Village who were headed to Upper Assam for NRC hearings, met with an accident at Khanapara in Guwahati city on Sunday.

As many as 24 villagers, including two children Faruk Abdullah, 3, and Kulsum Begum, 5, were injured in the incident. The villagers have confirmed to Inside Northeast that at least 50 villagers had been travelling on the bus when it met with the ill-fated accident.

One of the villagers told Inside Northeast: "We are at the end of our wits. We have been summoned so far, almost 500 kms away. Moreover, we have to reach in a day. These mishaps are bound to happen."

The bus carrying the villagers collided with a truck carrying tar for road construction. Several of the villagers sustained severe burn injuries and the injured have been admitted to the GMCH hospital in Guwahati. Dreadful sights at the hospital as the poor villagers with frightening injuries can be seen fighting for their lives!

Meanwhile, Congress legislators Rekibuddin Ahmed and Rockybul Hussain reached the hospital on Monday to take stock of the situation.

Chaygaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed lamented the plight of the villagers, while criticizing the current BJP administration in the State. "Nobody should be harassed like this. People will never feel sympathy for other people and will only realize their faults once things like these start happening to them."

It has been reported that two people travelling on a bike were also part of the collision, and breathed their last at Nemcare hospital in Guwahati city.

Controversy continues to surround the NRC in Assam as the Government, dissatisfied with the process, is pushing for 're-verification.
