Guwahati, January 19, 2019:
Assam’s youth heartthrob Zubeen Garg has become one of the most vocal voices against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
“Rajya Sabha (session) is coming up. We are continuing our resistance. We have organized a protest in Guwahati’s Latasil. Many organizations are coming there”, said the crooner, addressing a crowd at his concert. He also sang his latest song, Politics Nokoriba Bondhu, which takes jabs at the BJP administration and the implementation of the proposed Bill, at the concert.
Zubeen assured the crowd that he is not affiliated with either the Congress or the BJP. “I am a socialist. We are free, we are Kanchenjunga”, added the singer, alluding to his upcoming film, Kanchenjunga.
The singer had first posted a letter on social media addressed to the Assam Chief Minister, addressing him as ‘Sarba da.’ In the letter, Zubeen had urged the Chief Minister to withdraw the Bill and promised of dire consequences if it was not done.
After the Chief Minister remained silent on the issue, Zubeen had again taken to Twitter to return the votes the BJP had gained by using the Zubeen sung campaign song, 'Sakalure Ananda Sarbananda'.
Zubeen finally stopped prodding the administration on social media and took to the streets to protest against the Bill. On January 17, which is celebrated as 'Silpi Diwas' across Assam, Zubeen protested against the Bill and observed the day as 'Sankalpa Day' at Tezpur.
