Assam: Home visit, educational packages, mobile phones to students to curb digital divide

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has taken the initiative to provide an educational package to students to continue with their studies without getting hampered by the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

This was revealed by the Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on the floor of the Assam Legislative Assembly today in a written reply to a question asked by Sibsagar legislator Akhil Gogoi.

Gogoi raised the question in view of students facing difficulty in coping with their studies due to the 'digital divide'.

Ranoj Pegu said, "Through this educational package, District Mission Coordinator of Sarba Siksha Mission will distribute self-educating tools and exercise materials to students in an interval of  every 15 days."

Pegu also said that the course materials are being made available via Doordarshan and radio so that poor internet connectivity and lack of devices do not deprive students of their daily studies.

At the same time, the Assam government has taken the initiative of  "home visit" by teachers, school management committee, and other educators to the students of primary and upper primary level.

He also said that with the help of the National Council of Educational Research and Training's (NCERT) NISHTHA program, the Assam government has trained as many as 5,904 teachers on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the financial year of 2019-20 and 2020-2021 and it would continue to do so in the current financial year.

Assam Legislative Assembly to table Budget 2021-22

As the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly is going to table its first budget for the FY 2021-22 on Friday, Ranoj Pegu informed that he has proposed Ajanta Neog, the Finance Minister, to facilitate the students of Class 9 and 10 with mobile phones.
