Assamese film icon Jahnu Barua on Monday lashed out at the weak during a protest against the amendment of the Citizenship Act that was organized in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam today.
Addressing the gathering, the renowned filmmaker said, "From my student days till now, I have been faced with a question: why does the Assamese jaati have to protest for some reason or the other? We have only held agitations. When I was in school, we agitated for the first Brahmaputra bridge. We agitated for our language, agitation against foreigners. Different kinds of protests."
Stating that people of other states have not had to protest for their rights, Barua lamented that no other state has had to stage agitations of such a nature. "It is because our leaders are so weak that they have become yes men to the power corridors of Delhi. However, the rulers of other states are so strong that Delhi can never make them toe their line."
At the same protest, senior advocate Arup Barbaruah alleged that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a former President of AASU never took part in the 'Assam Agitation' (1979-1985). "He is holding the BJP's hands, and whatever he is doing, he is proving to be detrimental for Assam", he added.
Today, the Bordubi unit of the All Assam Students' Union organized a rally at the Bardibi High School to protest against the controversial Bill-turned-Act. Scores came together to protest against the CAA at the protest that had been termed as the 'Voice of the People'. The AASU was joined by 30 other organizations and many indigenous organizations in this protest.
