Following harassment faced by scores of migrants and immigrants in returning to Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland (as reported by Inside NE already) in the last few days following publication of the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Dispur has initiated DGP-level communications with these States. This was confirmed by a senior Assam government official on Thursday.
As reported by Inside NE, scores of migrants and immigrants, who work in sizeable numbers in Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland in construction sites, besides running shops, had returned to Assam to check their names in the NRC draft.
However, many are facing harassment in returning now to these States as most Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland-bound vehicles are being stopped and passengers checked for documentary evidence to prove their Indian citizenship like PAN cards, Aadhar card, voters’ photo identity cards, etc, including proof that their names have been included in the NRC draft.
And not only the police, even activists of social organisations and students’ bodies are involved in checking documents.
While many are facing harassment, a few are unable to return as their names have not featured in the complete draft NRC published on July 30.
