Assam jolted thrice today; number of earthquakes reaches 28 in a week

GUWAHATI: Three mild earthquakes, ranging between 2.6 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, jolted parts of Assam and the Northeast today.

According to the National Centre for Seismological (NCS), the first quake of 2.6 magnitude hit Assam at 12.57 pm in the afternoon with its epicenter at a depth of 27 km in West Karbi Anglong district in Central Assam.

The second earthquake hit at 8.09 pm with its epicenter at a depth of 15 km in Sonitpur district. The magnitude was 3.3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was close to that of the 6.4 magnitude quake that rocked Assam on April 28.

It was followed by another 2.7 magnitude quake with the epicenter at the same location in Sonitpur district. The epicenter was 1 km above the earlier one though.

No damage or loss of life has been reported so far.

With the three quakes today, the number of aftershocks following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake reached 27. A total of 24 quakes, including that of April 28, had their epicenters in the same location of Sonitpur district.

The quakes are stated to be a result of convergence of the Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate.

The 6.4 magnitude quake on April 28 morning caused two deaths due to shock and heart attack, and large scale damage to buildings and infrastructure in Central and Lower Assam.
