Assam Justice Hrishikesh Roy Appointed as Supreme Court Judge

Guwahati, September 19, 2019:

Justice Hrishikesh Roy from Assam has been appointed as a Supreme Court Judge. Roy was among the four High Court Judges who were appointed as Supreme Court Judges on Wednesday.

It is to be noted that the selection of the new Judges took the judge strength of the Supreme Court to 34, which is the highest number ever.

Presently, Hrishikesh Roy is the 35th Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, with effect from August 8, 2018. Justice Roy is an alumnus of Delhi University. He did his LL. B from Campus Law Centre of the University in 1982.

Earlier, in December 2004, Roy was designated as a senior advocate in Gauhati High Court. He was later sworn in as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on October 12, 2006 and was made a permanent judge with effect from July 15, 2008.

It is to be mentioned here that the Central Government had cleared the appointment of four new Supreme Court Judges from different states and President Ram Nath Kovind had appointed them as judges of the apex court on Wednesday.

The other three new Judges of the Supreme Court are Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Krishna Murari and Rajasthan Chief Justice S.A. Ravindra Bhat.
