GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), which was at the forefront of the massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act last year, is now looking to re-launch the protest, even as attention is now shifting towards the Assembly elections in Assam that will see the ruling BJP party take on a host of new regional parties as well as the Congress-AIUDF combine. The agitation against the 'CAA' began after the contentious Bill -- that seeks to grant citizenship status to 6 minority communities from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh -- was passed in both Houses of the Indian Parliament.

"We have resolved re-launch the agitation against 'CAA'. Around 20 organizations and the 'Raijor Dal' will begin the protests in Sivasagar in Upper Assam on December 11 next. On the 12th, we are announcing a "Raijor Garjan (public's roar) against the CAA across the State in all districts," Mukut Deka, the General Secretary of the KMSS told Inside Northeast.

Deka further informed us that the KMSS will be paying respect to the martyrs of the anti-CAA during its Raijor Garjan protest. "We will pay "shraddhanjali" to the deceased on December 12, and then hold a protest programme to demand the repealing of the 'CAA..'

The KMSS General Secretary also asserted that the demand for the release of Akhil Gogoi, the incarcerated Chief Adviser of the students' body will also be raised. "On the 11th, our activists will take to the streets with the express demand to release Akhil.

Interestingly, Gogoi's hearing was stopped due to an internet connectivity issue at the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday. The hearing was conducted through virtual mode via video conferencing. The Justice at Gauhati High Court was unable to hear CV Raju, the advocate of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Gogoi was arrested amid the agitation against CAA on December 12. NIA lodged him under sections of 124A, 153A, 153B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was also booked under the sections of 18 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act (UAPAA).
