Congress parliamentarian from Assam Gaurav Gogoi on June 29th, 2020, while launching a blistering attack at the BJP-led State Government over the complete lockdown in Guwahati, dubbed it as ‘brutal’.
“The extended 14-day lockdown in Guwahati, Assam is brutal. With essential groceries being closed, vegetable prices soared in last two days. Daily wagers and factory workers are miserable. BJP cites lack of hospital beds as the reason. Sounds more like total failure to the people,” Gogoi tweeted.
Meanwhile, former three-time Assam Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said that the lockdown in Guwahati has proved government’s failure to contain the spread of COVID-19.

“Lockdown declared by Dr. Himanta B Sarma is not only unwise & also to cover up his failure in containing COVID-19 patients but also failed to adequately arrange hospital beds for treatment. Ultimately adversely affecting the daily wage earners, common people,” the senior Congressman tweeted.
The Assam government has enforced complete lockdown in Guwahati with effect from June 28th, 2020 midnight for 14 days and weakened lockdown in town and municipal areas to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.
Guwahati saw a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases without travel history of late which raised many questions on part of the government in COVID-19 management.
Assam has registered 7492 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far; of which 2390 are active cases and 5088 have been cured and discharged while 11 died due to the infection. The state has the highest COVID-19 cases in the Northeast followed by Tripura and Nagaland.
