Guwahati: Priyada Gogoi, the ailing mother of the jailed Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has been hospitalized due to old-age related ailments. The firebrand leader's mother has been admitted to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) in Assam.
Meanwhile, Priyada's son, Akhil, is still incarcerated due to his role in the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December of 2019. Gogoi, the leader of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), was arrested on December 12, 2019, from Jorhat, during the height of the anti-CAA protests in the state, as a “preventive measure” in view of the deteriorating law and order situation. Three of Gogoi's associates were taken into custody the next day.

Even as Akhil has developed several medical complications during his stay in the prison, Priyada Gogoi has been repeatedly urging the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government to show him some mercy and release him.
At the same time, Akhil's KMSS brethren have already formed a political unit called 'Raijor Dal' (People's Party) to challenge the NDA in Assam. The Congress party, the biggest political opponent of the BJP in Assam, has claimed that it is in talks with the KMSS' political party to include it in its 'Grand Alliance.'
Priyada Gogoi's Role in the anti-CAA agitation:
Priyada Gogoi was one of the most prominent faces of the agitation against the controversial 'CAA' that rocked Assam at the end of 2019. After her son Akhil was jailed for leading protesters in Upper Assam after rage and resentment swept across the state, Priyada appealed Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to release her son. At one point in time, the leader's mother even went on a hunger strike, demanding the release of her son.
Videos of a visibly ailing Priyada went viral on social media platforms. Soon, the anti-CAA forces joined up with Akhil's mother and her humble home in Golaghat district turned into a protest ground against the Bill-turned-Act. Women from all walks of life joined the peasant leader's mother in protests that were led primarily by women shouting slogans and holding aloft banners demanding the government to roll back its controversial legislation.
