Assam man excluded from NRC list commits suicide

Udalguri, March 4, 2019:

In a tragic incident in Assam, a man Bholabari Tea Garden in Udalguri committed suicide after being allegedly harassed for National Register of Citizens (NRC) related issues.

The deceased has been identified as Bhaben Das (48) and he allegedly committed suicide after he was being repeatedly called for corrections in Udalguri and other places. Locals have said that despite having documents of both 1951 and 1971, he was being called for the corrections repeatedly.

Following the incident, the Assam Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation has demanded a proper investigation into the incident.

It may be mentioned that many similar incidents have been reported as suicides of people excluded from the NRC list have become commonplace in Assam as many people have felt ‘humiliated’ after facing harassment from the NRC authorities.
