Assam: Minor boy in Cachar declared as ‘Foreigner'

The declaration of a seven-year-old boy as a ‘Foreigner' in Cachar district has left his parents at a loss.

Bijoy Das, son of Navindra Das, of Jalalpur village under Katigorah police station was declared as a Foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal in Silchar. The boy’s parents wondered as to how the minor could be a Foreigner when they are genuine Indian citizens.

In a recent order, the Supreme Court had said that the inclusion of ‘D voters’ and their descendants in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be kept on hold. The NRC ‘complete draft’ is due for publication on July 30.
