Assam: MLA Phanidhar Talukdar resigns AIUDF as party fails to be a part of Govt.

GUWAHATI: Former AIUDF MLA from Bhabanipur Phanidhar Talukdar officially joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. Talukdar stated that the poverty of his constituency made him join BJP.

GUWAHATI: Former AIUDF MLA from Bhabanipur Phanidhar Talukdar officially joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. Talukdar stated that the poverty of his constituency made him join BJP.

Speaking to the media Talukdar said, “People in my constituency are poor. How long will I be in opposition and how it is going to benefit people of my area? So I joined BJP”.

Citing the reason for his leaving All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), he said: “I left AIUDF to work with the Chief Minister. There is no issue with AIUDF but I was hoping that they’ll be part of the government.”

Earlier today, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcome Phanidhar Talukdar into the party and tweeted, “The faith of leaders across the political spectrum in Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to grow. Happy to have met honourable MLA of Bhabanipur Phanidhar Talukdar, who resigned from AIUDF and will join BJP later today. I welcome him to our Pariwaar.”

With this, the number of MLAs from the party in the Assam cabinet has come down to 15.

The AIUDF, which was in alliance with Congress in the assembly election in the state this year, managed to win 16 seats, while its ally Congress won 44 seats.
