The weeklong celebration of 70th Van-Mahotsav successfully concluded today in Bongaigaon in Assam along with the rest of India after witnessing a rich number of plantation and free seedling distributions throughout the district.
Van-Mahotsav -as the name denotes, is the week long annual 'festival of trees' celebrated in the first week of July. This unique festival was pioneered by Dr.K.M.Munshi in 1950 and since then, India has been celebrating it to raise awareness on tree plantation and preservation and ill effects of deforestation and other related issues.
The celebration is expected to leave an impact on every citizen of India and will inspire them to plant a sapling in the Van-Mahotsav week. Honourable Chief Minister has expressed the desire that every government employee may take part in tree plantations for ensuring a clean and green Assam.
To mark and synchronize with the celebration of Van-Mahotsav across the country, Bongaigaon District Administration has taken up many plantation and free sapling distribution activities since the very first day of July. Plantation was done in each panchayat of the district during the entire week of the celebration. On the occasion, each and every government official of the district planted one sapling with the aim- “Each one plant one.”
On July 1, Bongaigaon Social Forestry Division planted 100 saplings and distributed 255 saplings at Gharachia Satra on the same day.
On July 2, the staff of Abhayapuri Forest Range planted 1000 seedlings in the vacant area of Nakkati Reserve Forest of Gosaipara-Rabhapara area with a target of total 20,000 seedling plantation in next couple of days in the same area.
In the same way, Social Forestry Division planted 50 saplings during the event. In Bhairab Hill Proposed Reserve Forest (PRF), Kachudola, a total 2500 planted and distributed. On the following days, 70 sapling plantation and 360 distributions was done by Social Forestry at Thakurani Mandir.
On the fifth day the Divisional Forest Officer, Aie Valley Division, Bongaigaon and Social Forestry Division Bongaigaon approximately 400 Sal and Neem saplings were distributed to every village household by the office of the DFO, Aie Valley Division, Bongaigaon and Social Forestry Division planted 30 and distributed 170 saplings.
Bongaigaon Social Forestry and Railway Authorities of Bongaigaon district jointly organized a plantation and seedling distribution programme at the Railway Institute, BG Colonyand a total of 80 of seedling were planted and approximately 155 saplings were distributed to student and local residents.
On the very last day, Briksha Pujan was observed at Chaibari area of Sagalkhuti PRF under Aie Valley Division Bongaigaon, a total 1000 of seedlings were planted with a target of planting 3000 seedlings in the area in the coming days and 500 seedlings distributed to the villagers.
As per the data received from DFO, Aie Valley Division, Bongaigaon District, including 33420 seedling plantation and 16100 seedling distribution, a total no. of 49520 seedling planted and distributed in the entire district during the week.
On the last day of celebration, Bongaigaon Social Forestry Division also planted a 50 sapling and distributed 550 sapling. In addition to the above, SF, Division Bongaigaon registered a total of approximately 25,800 sapling distribution including Head Quarter stock and distribution to the 6 nurseries located at various places of the district.
Apart from the above, all the government departments under Bongaigaon District Administration did plantation individually at their office premises actively responding to this celebration as per Govt.'s instruction. Thus the total of plantation ad sapling in the district reaches above approximately 70,000 during this week.
Deputy Commissioner, Bongaigaon , Adil Khan took strong initiative in attending many of these programs in person and taking the responsibility to sought all sorts of cooperation from the youth to preserve and harvest plants to create a more healthier, cleaner, and greener tomorrow.
