Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya has appealed for the installation of a 'portrait statue' of Assam’s 'Bharat Ratna' Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in the Vidhan Sabha. The appeal was made at the Lok Sabha session.
Recalling the contribution of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika to the art and culture of Assam, Baishya said, “The music icon had a lot of contribution as a constructing pillar of the nation, India."

Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conferring the Bharat Ratna Award, the country's highest honour, to Hazarika, Baishya added, “During the time when China attacked the country and reached Bomdila of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhupen Hazarika, through his songs, appealed to build a strong army.”
Following the appeal, speaker M Venkaiah Naidu had replied to Baishya in Assamese and assured that the parliamentary committee will look after the installation of a 'portrait statue' of the legend in the 'Vidhan Sabha.'
