Newly-elected Member of Parliament from Nagaon Constituency of Assam, Pradyut Bordoloi, brought up the issue of floods in Assam today during the ongoing Lok Sabha session on Wednesdaya and stated that the centre should take responsibility for the ongoing phenomenon.
Addressing the Speaker, he said: "Assam is in the grip of floods again. Flood will subside in a few days, or in a week or two. But it will leave behind a trail of devastation. In Assam, what will stay on is the yearlong phenomenon of riverbank erosions."
Bordoloi lamented that river bank erosion is not regarded as a 'riverbank calamity'. "The floods should be mitigated, and so should the erosion", he said. He also stated that the recurring floods and erosion have caused a huge drainage of precious resources in Assam, and stated that this should be the responsibility of the Government of India.
The MP urged the Jalshakti Ministry to treat the water management in a 'holistic manner. He also suggested that the Northeastern states should have a 'river valley authority' to manage the water resources in the region. "We could put up water refineries in Assam, we could construct the pipelines, and provide nirmal, swacch, Mansarovar water to the rest of the nation", he said, providing an alternate solution to the ongoing 'water crisis' in the country.
