Guwahati, February 21, 2020:

Assam Coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Hitesh Dev Sarma has urged the the Deputy Commissioners and Registrar of Citizens Registrations (DRCR) of all the districts to furnish the details of all the “ineligible persons” included in the NRC.

Sarma had issued a letter to all the district commissioners to send the details of the persons who were ineligible yet included in the NRC so that the same could be reported to the Registrar General of India.

“It has come to the knowledge of the undersigned that after publication of final NRC on 31st August 2019, few names of ineligible persons are found present in the final NRC, particularly who are Doubtful Voters (DV), Declared Foreigner (DF), those with cases pending in Foreigners’ Tribunal (PFT) and descendants of DV (DVD), DFD, PFTD,” read the letter dated February 19.

Sarma mentioned that “the matter is of utmost importance as the details have to be reported to the Registrar General of India urgently”.

It may be mentioned here that Sarma was appointed as the state NRC coordinator after Prateek Hajela, who had drawn the ire of the people of Assam for improper documentation of the process. He was transferred to his home state Madhya Pradesh.

Recently, the Assam NRC came under the scanner after the online details of NRC went “missing” from its official website,  www.nrcassam.nic.in , which later was clarified that the reason was nonpayment of dues to Wipro for providing its cloud services.

It may be mentioned here that the final NRC that was published on August 31, 2019 had a total of 3,11,21,004 names in it. The citizenship exercise targeted at filtering the illegal Bangladeshis residing in Assam had drawn widespread criticism due to its topsy-turvy turn of events.

The new NRC Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma who was on leave after his appointment following criticism for his “controversial” Facebook posts has sprung into action amid rising concerns of different stakeholders of the NRC.
