Guwahati: Some major relief for the Assamese people as the prices of onions are now coming down from as high as Rs. 80 to Rs. 50 per kilogram! This decision to reduce the price of the commodity was taken after an urgent meeting was called by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday. According to reports, this reduction in prices was first witnessed in Pamohi, where the onions, which were being sold at Rs. 60 in wholesale price earlier, are now being sold at Rs. 50.

In a meeting held yesterday, Assam CM Sonowal pointed out that the disparity in prices of items like potato, onion and vegetables in wholesale and retail markets. Sonowal has appealed the traders engaged in unfair practices not to do so.

Stating that the soaring prices of potato, onion, vegetables, eggs, cooking oils etc have impacted the common people adversely and caused strong resentment among them, Sonowal said that the government cannot remain "inactive" in these dire times.

CM Sonowal also said that 'integrated dedicated teams' would be set up by the State Government to keep tabs on the price rise of the essential items.

He also said that people have to be made aware of the prices of the vegetables so that they are not made to pay more by unscrupulous businessmen.

Food and civil supplies minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury has also been directed to hold another meeting which will take place today with those representatives of shopping malls and members of the business community absent on Wednesday’s meeting.

Yesterday's meeting took place against the backdrop of raging protests across Assam over the rise in prices of essential commodities. Several indigenous organizations and political rivals of the ruling BJP have raised a hue-and-cry over what is being seen as an exorbitant rise in the prices of essential commodities.
